Beyond intermittent claudication and major adverse cardiac events, severe PAD can lead to critical limb ischemia which if untreated, might result in leg amputation and a high mortality rate as a result 11. While PAD associated walking impairment adversely influences quality of life for PAD patients, there is an added elevated risk of developing major adverse cardiac events including myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure and both cardiovascular death and all-cause mortality 8, 9, 10. An early and the most common clinical presentation of PAD is intermittent claudication, which involves pain in the lower limb (particularly the calves) mainly induced by physical activities such as walking and subsiding by rest 6, 7. While traditional atherosclerotic risk factors participate in the development of PAD, nicotine addiction with habitual smoking is considered the most prevalent risk for these patients, and diabetes mellitus is likewise an important variable 4, 5. Lower extremity PAD is the most common form of PAD affecting more than 8.5 million Americans and more than 230 million patients worldwide 2, 3. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) generally refers to a progressive circulation disorder, characterized by narrowing or occlusion of the peripheral arteries 1. The results of this feasibility study indicate the diagnostic potential of the proposed method for the detection of PAD. More specifically, p-values of 0.0015 for PBFIV, 0.0183 for TRR, and 0.0048 for L0RR were obtained. Out of the four utilized metrics, three exhibited significantly different distributions between the two groups ( p-value < 0.05). Ultrasound data acquired from 13 legs in the patient group and 13 legs in the healthy group are analyzed. We examine the feasibility of this method through an in vivo study consisting of 14 PAD patients with abnormal ankle-brachial index (ABI) and 8 healthy volunteers. These metrics include post-occlusion to baseline flow intensity variation (PBFIV), total response region (TRR), Lag0 response region (L0RR), and Lag4 (and more) response region (L4 + RR). Four quantitative metrics are introduced for analysis of these variations. The method involves monitoring the variations of blood flow in the calf muscle in response to thigh-pressure-cuff-induced occlusion. In this study, we present a contrast-free ultrasound-based quantitative blood flow imaging technique for PAD diagnosis. Therefore, development of non-invasive and affordable diagnostic approaches can be highly beneficial in detection and treatment planning for PAD patients. Additionally, progression of PAD in the absence of timely intervention can lead to dire consequences. Thus, the find method has a running time dictated by the overhead of copying the array and calling find, whereas the loop method time is dictated by how many array elements one needs to visit to find the first non-zero element. While being a relatively prevalent condition particularly among aging patients, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) of lower extremities commonly goes undetected or misdiagnosed due to its symptoms being nonspecific. q is the location of the first non-zero element. Test results depend, of course, on the expected number of elements to visit before a non-zero element is found, as well as on the array length n. (I didn't add the bwconncomp answer because it's significantly slower). Method2 is the fixed version of this answer, using find and copying the array.

The chances of this happening are extremely slim, but if you’re feeling anxious about the health of you or your baby you may choose to skip the use of salicylic acid whilst you’re pregnant, as there are other more gentle acids available like lactic, glycolic, azelaic etc. This is to avoid the risk of too much salicylic acid being absorbed, which in extreme cases could cause toxicity - but you’d have to use a lot of salicylic acid at high concentrations for this to happen. A low concentration is safe to use, and it’s recommended to use it in a cleanser that washes off your skin, rather than as a leave-on treatment or high concentration treatment. It’s often used to treat acne, as it has great antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Salicylic acid is a BHA, meaning it goes deeper into pores than AHA’s. “Small concentrations of the AHA’s glycolic acid and lactic acid are pregnancy-safe exfoliating acids that can be applied topically. Lactic acid is more gentle, which can be helpful if you’re experiencing skin sensitivity, irritation or redness during your pregnancy,” Alice says. Melasma and acne are common skin concerns during pregnancy, which vitamin C can also help to treat.” What skincare ingredients are safe to use during pregnancy? Its ability to stimulate collagen production can be especially useful during pregnancy when swapping out your retinoid products that have a similar effect on cell-turnover. “Some of the skincare benefits of vitamin C include an increase in collagen production, treating hyperpigmentation and brightening the skin, as well as helping to protect against UV damage. It’s a naturally occurring antioxidant found in broccoli, citrus fruits and leafy greens that is diluted in skincare to make it less acidic, and therefore safe for use topically. vitamin C is a very safe ingredient for use on the skin during pregnancy. "vitamin C is unlike Retinoids, which are not recommended for pregnancy or breastfeeding, as they can contribute to high levels of vitamin A in the body, which can do serious harm to a foetus and impact your baby’s development. This then means that they can cross the placenta and affect the foetus,” says Alice Henshaw, founder of Skincycles, a science led cosmeceutical range that bridges the gap between dermatology treatments and at-home skincare, and owner of London’s Leading Cosmetic Clinic. “The issue with certain ingredients like Retinoids in pregnancy is that they’re absorbed by the skin and could find their way into the bloodstream due to increased circulation. But not vitamin C, you can absolutely use vitamin C serums while pregnant, as well as other vitamin C skincare formulations. Which will come as music to the ears of anyone who has had to begrudgingly pack away many of their lotions and potions thanks to them including ingredients that can be harmful to mother and baby while pregnant. The good new is that, yes, you can use vitamin C during pregnancy. "Take advice from your skincare doctor if you need to address any specific skin issues during pregnancy." Can you use vitamin C during pregnancy? However, because there is so much information and different opinions available, Dr Lapa recommends sticking to well-established pregnancy-safe products for your daily skincare routine. "Other commonly-used ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, sunscreen, self-tanning agents were not absorbed from the skin into the blood stream in any significant quantities and therefore deemed not to have any impact on the baby during pregnancy or breastfeeding." It's not all bad news though there are still plenty of ingredients that are safe to use according to the research. "A scientific study looked at the safety of skin care products during pregnancy and found that only hydroquinone and vitamin A products such as retinol and tretinoin have any potential of harm during pregnancy or breastfeeding." Hydroquinone is commonly used in skin lightening products like the ones that treat dark spots and pigmentation, and retinol is found in some anti-ageing products and wrinkle treatments. "Ingredients that are applied to the skin can potentially be absorbed into the blood stream and then pass through the placenta to the baby," she explains. However, according to Dr Lapa, it's important to avoid certain ingredients. With an array of expected skin concerns during pregnancy, it's all too tempting to call upon the most active skincare to hone in on the problem. Skin can feel dry and itchy after giving birth, or you may once again develop some pigmentation, and see some darker patches appear on your face.” What skincare to avoid during pregnancy? “Post birth, known as the ‘fourth-trimester’ fluctuation in hormones like oestrogen and progesterone means your skin's texture may change again. It became clear that this tiny animal was wounding some of the ocean’s mightiest residents. He also noticed that their mobile tongues and large lips allow them to form a vacuum on a smooth surface. In 1971, Everet Jones discovered small conical plugs of flesh in the stomachs of these sharks. By contrast, other sharks replace their teeth one at a time. The first breakthrough came in 1963, when a man called Donald Strasburg noticed that the cookie-cutter shark would shed its saw-like lower teeth as a single unit. People wondered if they were caused by other predators, parasitic lice, lampreys with their round toothy suckers, or even bacterial infections. everythingįrench naturalists discovered the cookie-cutter in the early 19th century, but no one connected this bizarre creature to the weird craters found on large fish until the 1970s. The fact that the youngster had two might mean that the cookie-cutter launched an unsuccessful strike, leaving the crescent-shaped wound, before finally getting a proper mouthful. None of these other individuals had similar wounds. Divers off Guadalupe Island have amassed the largest catalogue of white shark photos, and many individuals have been seen year after year. If this actually happened, it was probably a rare event. Maybe it tried to make a meal of the cookie-cutter and became a meal instead. But the luring hypothesis could explain why the great white was bitten near its mouth, rather than some less dangerous body part like a tail or underside. This is all speculation – no one has ever seen a cookie-cutter attack. The predator comes in for a closer look, and the cookie-cutter attacks. That is, except for the dark collar, which resembles the silhouette of a fish. The glow matches moonlight and starlight beaming down from above, rendering the sharks invisible to any predators looking up from below. Some scientists have suggested that they use this light to turn themselves into bait. Their entire undersides give off a vivid, green light, except for a dark collar around their throats. But they rise to the surface at night, and one of them may have encountered our poor shark during such an excursion.Ĭookie-cutters glow. Cookie-cutters spend the daytime at depths of up to 3,500 metres, where no great whites venture. Papastamatiou cautions that we can’t be sure of what happened, but here are some plausible guesses. Shark want cookie These are serious injuries-the biggest craters ever recorded were 5 centimetres wide and 7 centimetres deep. With twisting motions, it scoops out a chunk of flesh, leaving behind circular craters exactly like those that del Villar saw on the great white. When the cookie-cutter finds a victim, it latches on with its large fleshy lips and bites down with its saw blade. “I dont know of any other animal that leaves a bite like that.” Instead, Papastamatiou thinks that they were the bite-marks of another shark, just a sixth of the size-a cookie-cutter. “A wound from a hook should leave more of a hole and would not be as smooth,” he says. Del Villar took photos of the animal and sent them to a team of scientists, including Yannis Papastamatiou from the Florida Museum of Natural History. Both were just behind the corner of the young male’s fearsome mouth. The other was a round crater, still open and bloody. This episode was the first episode to make me realize there existed bad MLP episodes! That's a shame. Anyway, I'd point out more, but I think I've said enough. Especially considering how run into the ground it was by the fanbase. The best joke in this episode was Pinkie's "I'll wear this mustache" and not even that was really that funny. I already pointed some of it out, but still, it was just a bunch of dull and stupid jokes. The humor in general just wasn't very funny at all. Seriously? Twilight Sparkle is that caught up in her reading that she can't take a look to notice Spike, YET WHEN APPLEJACK MOVES A BLOODY PEN, SHE NOTICES? It's like this episode was made to make me point out logic flaws and idiotic characters. And to make it even more stupid and painful, all Applejack does is move a pen and get attention. She doesn't even take a second to look back to see Spike is telling her about the Dragon Code because she's too caught up in her books, and she doesn't even notice Spike crying. Most of them threw logic out the window (like, why didn't Rainbow Dash just take back flying into the rocks.?), were shoehorned in and forced into the episode, and then there's Twilight Sparkle. I know it was a failed joke, but I'm sure Spike's not THAT stupid to take a second to realize it was fake.Įven besides Spike, the characters in general were just idiotic. Did the writers for this episode take lessons from A Pal for Gary? That would probably explain it Then there's the part where Spike acts like they did a good job with the false Timberwolf. Come on, he's seriously much smarter than that. Like, he can clean up! We've seen him doing it in a bunch of other episodes, so why not here? He acts like he can't see the obvious screw-ups he's made. I might as well have a Breadwinners-like twerking joke in here.) and him screwing up chores. It started off with a failed "SMELL MY DIRTY FEET" joke (which is actually incredibly disgusting. The next thing I hated was how stupid and clumsy Spike was. For example, Hey Arnold's Arnold Saves Sid, and I remember when I used to watch Phineas and Ferb (I don't any more), there was an episode where that one kid saved Buford (the bully)'s life, and he had "The Bully Code." Real original there! Is there something with plots like these that need to have a "The code?" I'm guessing if you saved my life, it would be The MLP Episode Reviewer Code, I don't know. This one didn't really add anything, and just felt like a repeat of 1000 other episodes from other shows I've seen. Now, you'll probably say that there were other episodes that had overused plots that I probably gave better ratings to, but those most likely had TONS of charm and extra stuff added to the plot. That's probably why, but yeah.įirst of all, I feel the plot of this episode was incredibly overused, and not in a good way at all. cel-shaded to me, which reminded me of the graphics of Jet Set Radio and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Their animation was at least fluid, and they looked rather. Plus, I have to admit, the CGI Timberwolves, although they looked heavily out of place, actually looked pretty cool. I do have to give this episode credit for showing off Applejack's bravery with the Timberwolves in the beginning. Spike, as following his "Dragon Code," repays by doing any of Applejack's chores needed, except messing them up all the time, which leads to screwing up other problems of the Mane 6. Spike gets a day off, and takes a hot air balloon ride, which lands into a forest with a pack of Timberwolves, causing him to run off, however Applejack saves him. This does not reflect the opinions of the rest of the Brony community. This review comes from the opinions of the poster himself. I'm really not in the mood to review this right now. “We are very proud as a small Munich software house to be granted such a notable international recognition for our work,” said Neubäcker, receiving the award together with his three partners in Los Angeles. In his acceptance speech, Peter Neubäcker alluded to his philosophical and mathematical background, explained his own, singular vision of music, and described the beginnings and the spirit of the company. After all, Celemony has blazed open a radically new avenue of access to musical editing that for ten years now has made it impossible to imagine music production without it. Host and Grammy manager James McKinney opened with the legendary question posed long ago by Melodyne inventor Peter Neubäcker: “What does a stone sound like?” A truly philosophical approach to the world of sound technology, far away from the purely technical thought-processes that typically prevail in the industry, and yet it is for precisely that reason Celemony was chosen to receive this year’s Technical Grammy. Talking when there is no one else there: A person with dementia may be conversing with someone who is not in the room. This can involve physical movements or verbalizations that are out of character or do not make sense. To determine if someone with dementia is hallucinating, their caregivers can look for changes in their behavior. Learn more about what happens in the brain during a hallucination. Their reactions to the hallucination may depend on how the people around them react and respond. Hallucinations are extremely real to the person experiencing them. For some people, hallucinations are enjoyable and reassuring. A person may experience paranoia and panic, leading to a lack of trust in their caregivers. Sometimes, hallucinations can be terrifying and cause intense fear. They typically occur frequently and can continue for several minutes. These hallucinations involve realistic visions of people and animals. Visual hallucinations are most prevalent in people with Lewy body dementia. They may also believe they see someone they know, but that person has passed away. For example, a person with dementia may see people sitting in a room with them when they are alone. During a hallucination, a person may see, hear, or smell things that do not exist. The way a person experiences a hallucination depends on the type. However, hallucinations are a rare side effect of several other medications. Parkinson’s disease medications frequently cause hallucinations. Charles Bonnet syndrome can cause visual hallucinations, but these are due to failing eyesight and not dementia. People should treat this as a medical emergency. Inflammatory and infectious diseases, including pneumonia, may affect cognitive function and lead to delirium, which may cause hallucinations. Hallucinations are more common in people with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease dementia, though they can also occur in other types of dementia, including AD. These changes in the sensory processing areas of the brains of people with dementia are complex and may cause them to see or hear things that do not exist to others. What causes hallucinations in people with dementia?ĭementia causes progressive brain damage and can affect the regions of the brain responsible for processing the senses, including the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. |
